The event, co-chaired by ORBIS Organisation, the Vietnam Red Cross and the Danang Red Cross on October 5, was aimed to launch a corenea donation programme in the city. It attracted 300 volunteers and thousands of local residents.
Le Nguyen Nu Dinh, 22 years old from Ngu Hanh Son district said “My family totally supports my donation. I have also mobilized other people to do the same as me. However, a number of them still hesitate to join the movement due to the concept of keeping the whole body after death. I think they should overcome this psychological barrier and think positively to bring sight to the blind."
At the meeting, Pham Van Cai, one of the two people in the province offered with a free cornea transplant, said in a moved voice that, “I am very lucky among hundreds of thousands of blind people in Vietnam to be exempted from the surgery costs estimated at VND400 million ($20,408).
He expressed his gratefulness to the donor and doctors who helped him to stop dark days of sadness and also registered to offer corneas after he dies.
After the gathering, municipal leaders and representatives from agencies and organisations in the city pledged to support the cornea donation programme.
