Cu Lao Cham is famous not only for its
beautiful landscape but also for seafood.
Taking a cruise for nearly two hours from Bach Dang Wharf in Hoi An City, we reached Cu Lao Cham.  Miles Burton, a Dutch tourist was very interested in visiting this group of beautiful islands which has attracted an increasing number of visitors.
Cu Lao Cham consists of eight islands, including Hon Lao, Hon Dai,Hon Mo, Hon Kho Me, Hon Kho Con, Hon La, Hon Tai and Hon Ong with eight romantic sand banks, including the Huong, Lang, Bac, Xep, Chong, Bim, Nan and Ong. There are also Ba and Au Thuyen Caves and Hai Tang Pagoda. Cu Lao Cham has a population of nearly 3,000 people.
At Lang Wharf we met over 10 Italian tourists who arrived in another boat. “This is the first time I’ve been here. There are many wonderful things,” said Laura who went along the coast together with her husband and children.
The visitors went in different directions. Some of them walked to the water edge to wade. Others visited the shops selling sea products and forest vegetables, where the tour guide bought several kinds of sea products for our lunch. Some visitors went into small alleys to learn about the life of the local people. They took photos of small houses with racemes of violet flowers covering the roofs and moss-covered gates. The Spanish, Japanese and Italian visitors were very interested in souvenir items made from the shells of snails and oysters. I bought a white snail shell for my girl friend in Hanoi.
Leaving Lang Wharf we embarked the ship to the Chong beach, which has the shape of an arc and smooth white sand. The beach is several hundred meters long but it is a focal point of the whole Cu Lao Cham. On the beach there are several umbrellas made of palm leaves. Behind the beach are mountainous slopes with verdant trees. Some Italian couples enjoyed swimming in the clear blue water, while other visitors sunbathed on the beach or sat in a hammock under the shade of coconut trees to drink beer. After having relaxing moments we had a lunch of delicious seafood.
We returned after a one-day tour on Cu Lao Cham and wished to re-visit the islands in the future.
Cu Lao Cham covers an area of 15 km2 on theEast Sea , 25km northeast of Hoi An Town in Central Vietnam. It has 135 species of corals, of which six species have been first found in the Vietnamese sea, 500 carpets of alga and seaweed, 202 species of fish, 4 species of lobsters and 84 species of mollusk. In 2006, Cu Lao Cham was recognized as a national historical and cultural relic. It is being slated by UNESCO for being recognized as a biosphere reserve.
